Horseshoe Ribbons for Sandy Hook

Recently, we received a phone call from Steve Storms of Montague Blacksmith Supply in New York asking if FPD would donate horseshoes to a group of farriers from Newtown, Connecticut. Led by farrier Joe Santos, the group planned to shape the shoes into ribbons, paint them green and white and sell them at a fundraiser benefiting the memorial for the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy.  We were happy to participate by providing the Kerckhaert SX-7 horseshoes.

The group of farriers working with Joe Santos on the project included John Matthews, Joey Boccuzzi, Willy Jaret, Bo Crotta, Corey Peterson, Mim Mucherino and Dr. Bob Neff, DVM.  A total of 300 ribbons were made using the Kerckhaert SX-7 horseshoes donated by FPD.  All of the ribbons will be sold for $5.00 each at the benefit to be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Edmond Town Hall on 45 Main Street in Newtown, CT.  Admission is $10.00 per person.  If you are in the area, stop in and support your fellow farriers – and the Newtown community.

Everyone at FPD is keeping the Newtown community in our thoughts as they continue to heal after this terrible tragedy.

This is What We’re Talking About in the Farrier Trade

We just received the comment below from Jesse Silverman on an earlier post regarding our project to bring more educational material to the industry and Mike Wildenstein’s involvement in that effort. I think it sums up how a lot of people see Mike’s overall contributions to the industry and to many of the individuals within.

Farrier at Work

Mike Wildenstein modifying a Kerckhaert shoe during recent filming of educational footage for the farrier industry.

Hey, I wanna start by saying I was overwhelmed today to hear that Mike was now a member of your team. I’m outta the loop with clinics and industry evolutions, (appreciative and blessed to be busy in the dead of winter). My local supplier met him at the Summit, and after seeing her on a freezing snowy morning when most of us would or should go home, I felt amazingly inspired and pushed through the day. I went through Mike’s program in ’94 (Cornell), and haven’t seen him and have hardly spoken to him since. Please forward my email address to him! Amazingly, I speak about him often everyday with my apprentices, using knowledge forever burned in my brain from class discussions. Every shoe I use is a Kerckhaert, mainly SX-8′s, DF’s, and the Century aluminums are great. I look forward to Mikes’ innovative input on future designs. I know the basic training videos are neccessary, but let’s be real; watching Mike forge is like watching an orchestra conductor lead a symphony. If you are taking requests, I’d like to see some everyday modifications that enhance already incredible “keg” shoes. To sum up this very long post, that I hope isn’t too long, very few men have made the impact on my life Mike has. I am genuinely grateful and honored to have spent those 4 months at the beginning of my now almost 20 year career with him.

New Phase for FPD Farrier Info

Farrier info for Web

Mike Wildenstein applying Kerckhaert DF Grand Prix lateral support hind shoe.

Mike Wildenstein, CJF, FWCF (hons) recently signed on with FPD to help with our clinic program. We have been planning other ways to promote education in the farrier industry and Mike’s involvement will be a key to providing ideas and material for that effort.

Front hoof

Front hoof being fit for a Kerckhaert Classic Roller, one of a number of shoe options from Kerckhaert that can enhance breakover. Another shoe considered for the front end of this horse was the Steel Comfort.

We recently spent 2 days working on video footage for a series of clips on the fundamentals involved in shoeing a horse. The footage also begins to detail the wide range of professional products FPD supplies to the market. The initial phase of this work is basic and will cover information that practicing farriers are likely to be familiar with. The plan is to set the foundation first and build from that point. We’re confident Mike’s experience as an educator will provide good guidance as we go forward and the results will be solid.

Hoof Problems and Farrier Observation

Bottom of foot

There are couple of indicators of problems with the balance of this foot. Toe crack and stretched white line are the two most obvious. How would you approach the shoe fit for the foot? See any other issues? Email us at fpd@farrierproducts.com

The upcoming issue of the Natural Angle has a section dealing with observations farriers have to make with every horse they work on. This may become a regular section for the Natural Angle and we hope readers will feel free to comment and give their own view of images that will be in the articles.

Dave Farley and Roy Bloom have a DVD for the farrier market that covers their ideas of things to view before deciding how to go forward with hoof prep, shoe choice and shoe fit. Many farriers have developed similar checklists. “The 12 Points of Reference, Balancing the Equine Hoof” helps to encapsulate a solid approach to the challenge of doing a good job of balancing the foot and applying shoes that help when trimming alone won’t resolve the issues they are faced with.

Feel free to send comments or questions to fpd@farrierproducts.com

American Farriers Journal Article Cites Kerckhaert Horseshoes and Liberty Nails

Kerckhaert shoes

Kerckhaert shoes dominate the top end market in West Palm Beach and the latest additions- DF Select and the Comfort series continue that trend.

The following excerpt is reprinted from the article Sport Horses with permission from the American Farriers Journal.  Originally published in the July/August 2012 Hoof Care For The Performance Horse: An AFJ Special Report, the author of the article is Red Renchin, Technical Editor for American Farriers Journal.  The full report can be purchased by visiting the AFJ website at www.americanfarriers.com.

Article: What Top Farriers Use

Most sport horses, except for show hunters, will compete in steel shoes on their front feet.  Ideally, show hunters move long and low with minimum knee action, so they are shod with lightweight aluminum shoes.  Steel shoes are used behind in all the disciplines.

Joy Ream owns Palm Beach Farrier Supply in Wellington, Fla.  She is widely known for procuring whatever her customers want.  During the winter months, the best sport horses in the country flock to Wellington to compete.  The farriers who shoe them also come.  Many of them go to Joy’s place to buy their supplies.  I asked her what they are buying.

The Kerckhaert DF is the overwhelming favorite for shoeing the front feet on jumpers, dressage and eventing horses in sizes 1 through 6. SX-8 clipped are often used on smaller feet.

A perimeter fit is used when the angles of the feet are 52 degrees or higher and a set-back blunter toe when the angle is lower.  For the horses with lower angles, the Kerckhaert Classic Roller and the Mustad Equilibrium are preferred; with the Natural Balance shoe a distant third.

The choice of a toe clip or a side clip on the front shoes is still a personal one, but the trend seems to be that even some of the diehard side clip users are switching to toe clips. If you do use toe clips, it is essential you learn how to set them into the wall properly or your toes will start running forward on you.  Side-clipped shoes, either factory made or with clips hand-drawn, are the norm for hind shoes.

For hunter fronts, there is a dead heat between the St. Croix Eventer Plus and Kerckhaert’s new Century Support shoe.

The Werkman hinds were the shoes of choice for the hind feet.  This has changed now that Kerckhaert has come out with the DF Select.  Farriers who were using the Werkman are now switching to the DF Select in significant numbers.

In the nail department, the Delta E4 slim, E5 slim and E6 slim currently lead the pack.  They are being threatened, though, by the Liberty line of nails.  Ream expects them to dominate next year.

Educational Programs for Farriers

Farrier clinics

Mike Wildenstein, former head of the Farrier Program at Cornell University has joined the FPD group of clinicians promoting continuing education in the farrier industry.

FPD has been fortunate to have a solid list of farrier clinicians dedicated to improving the skills and education of farriers throughout North America. Recently, we have added a well known and respected name to that list. Mike Wildenstein, CJF, FWCF, (Hons), has agreed to come on board to help us with the company goal of supporting and providing opportunities for continuing education and development.

KHS classroom

Mike has a long list of credentials and backs it up with each program he participates in. This week he spoke to a group of students at Kentucky Horseshoeing School in Richmond, KY. KHS is one of the leading school programs in the US and often brings in outside speakers to supplement the curriculum offered at the school.

You can expect to see Mike at many of the dealer events sponsored by FPD, as well as programs such as the Hoof Care Summit and other educational venues. We certainly feel fortunate to have him working with our team.

Hammer Time at Bloom Forge

farriers forging

There was a pretty intense gathering of farriers this past week at Bloom Forge in Drummond, Wisconsin. Roy Bloom hosts a number of forging clinics at his facility and this was definitely a high powered, high intensity group going at it.

A number of farriers from the region decided to bring in one of the top hands in the competition world, Craig Trnka, from Edgewood, NM, to guide them through the two day clinic. Craig is the driving force behind the World Championship Blacksmiths Association– a group dedicated to improving the skills of its members by organizing top end forging competitions. Any one that has attended a WCB event can see why the participants steadily rise to the top in forging competitions.
